Chapter 46: Steve Olson

Fall 2011

Steve Olson is a skateboard-circuit legend. In the late ’70s Olson changed the way people rode skateboards while helping introduce a punk appeal to the scene. He was 16 when he started skating, and he was quickly recognized as one of the top bowl riders in California, winning Skateboarder and World Champion Of The Year in ’78. He rode for Santa Cruz on the original test team for Independent Trucks and helped produced the design features for their famous trucks.

From skateboard icon to visual artist, Olson’s transition has been flawless, and his art is said to represent a perfect meld of “culture and counter culture” by Juice magazine. While he straddles the line between skateboarding and art, his pieces represent an independence of the two, with strong social commentary and use of various materials, making him simultaneously dynamic and successful.

As Guest Curator of Frank Chapter 46, Steve Olson is conducting interviews with New York and LA legends who also happen to be close friends. From Eric Dressen, to Stecyk III, to Cesario “Block” Montano, Olson will bring a rarely seen depth and insight into each interview.

Chapter 45: Philippines

Summer 2011

Nestled between Indonesia, Vietnam, China, and Japan, the Philippines is comprised of over 7,000 islands. The capital, Manila, is the most densely populated city on the planet, while the archipelago is third on the list of countries with the most annual emigrants to the US. Its culture has been shaped by distant nations as much as by immediate neighbors, and in turn the Filipino diaspora has made a tremendous impression on the world.

Westerners regularly come into contact with Filipino culture, but the Philippines remains a hazy spot on our mental maps. We give harsh descriptions of “balut” and hold Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao in awe, but lack a deeper understanding of a complex country and culture.

Frank Chapter 45 will focus on the unique, seemingly disparate pieces that make up the modern-day Philippines, as well as the larger Filipino community, from New York to Los Angeles to the UAE. Features include contributions from DJ Neil Armstrong, skater Willy Santos, martial artist Dan Inosanto, and comic-book artist Leinil Francis Yu, as well as an illustrated collection of Filipino myths, a photoessay on the ubiquitous jeepney, and (of course) a closer look at boxer Manny Pacquiao’s impact on his country and beyond.

Chapter 44: Fool's Gold

Spring 2011

The Brooklyn-based record label Fool’s Gold was founded in 2007 by DJs A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs and quickly established itself with a non-stop series of releases bridging hip-hop and electronic music, introducing artists like Kid Sister, Kid Cudi, and Duck Sauce, while being dubbed an "indie innovator" by Billboard and a "tastemaker label" by the New York Times. With acclaimed graphic artist Dust La Rock providing a clever and constantly evolving aesthetic for all Fool’s Gold visuals, the company has become more than an independent music powerhouse, but a trendsetting lifestyle brand putting a unique stamp on events, collaborations, and much more.

Chapter 43: Bug Out!

Winter 2010

New York is brimming with creative characters, but few have the history or style of Ricky Powell. The self-described “bummy sophisticate” is best known as a NYC-born photographer with a passion for people, animals, sports, and the city that raised him.

Chapter 42: Cuba

Fall 2010

As far as political notoriety goes, Cuba punches far above its weight. The feisty Caribbean nation is well known for playing “David” in a longstanding conflict with its nextdoor neighbor, and still Fidel Castro and Che Guevara remain two of the most recognized characters in contemporary history.

Chapter 41: The Seventh Letter

Summer 2010

The Seventh Letter was founded in 2000 by the rumored leader of the infamous West Coast graffiti crews AWR MSK to act as a platform for crew members to showcase their work in the form of fine-art exhibitions, apparel, and other special projects.

Chapter 40: Gumball 3000

Spring 2010

Since 1999, the Gumball 3000 Rally has redefined grand touring for the modern era, creating a new genre of entertainment by combining the world’s most eccentric and influential characters with the most incredible cars ever built, for an eight day, 3000 mile road trip. The attraction of the Gumball transcends social barriers, appealing to the adventurer in all of us, regardless of status or wealth.

Chapter 39: Middle East

Winter 2009

With vast sections of the Middle East marred by violence and struggle, many Westerners view the region as a chaotic, lawless land. Without delving into the West’s role in the chaos, most would agree that popular Western opinion of the Middle East is overwhelmingly negative, and often informed by what is covered in the mainstream media. While portions of the Middle East are embroiled in serious conflicts, the region is also home to some of the oldest and richest cultures in the world.
