The Most Colorful River In The World

The Rio Caño Cristales, also known as "the river that ran away to paradise," "the most beautiful river in the world," and "the river of five colours," is world famous for its colorful display, located near the town of La Macarena in Colombia, South America.

During a brief span between the wet and dry seasons when the water level is just right, the many varieties of algae and moss located at the bottom of the river bloom in a brilliant display of colors. Areas of yellow, blue, green, black, and red coat the water.

The part of the river where the colorful blooms occur is quite isolated and is not accessible by road. Adventurous tourists can now fly into La Macarena and make their way to to the river site on foot as part of a guided tour. The site was effectively closed to tourists for several years because of guerrilla activity in the region along with concerns about the impact of unregulated tourist traffic. However, the site was reopened to visitors in 2009. So far, only about 1,000 people have visited Caño Cristales, including around 100 foreign tourists.

you all know rainbows come from this river right?? why else you think guerrilla fighters were keeping people off of this river?? 'cause they wanted to keep all the gold to themselves of course !!

P.S. Gorillas / Guerrillas ... can anyone spot the difference ??

Please everyone out there!!

My father was a gorilla, he worked very hard so his children could grow up in a better world.
When I was 10 years old he was captured and sent to a zoo, we had to pay 12 dollars every week-end just to visit him.
SO PLEASE NO MORE GORILLA JOKES.

... you might wanna wake up ... you are living in the final stage of natural selection ... the part where we, as humanity, either earn to stay alive, or die off and get replaced by other monkeys.

Sheesh .. look at the news, it's kinda obvious. On a slightly more serious note; that is one beautifull display of nature.

in english dictionaries it is pronounced the same as the word gorilla, although the word in spanish speaking regions would still be pronounced the way you say it is. It's how words evolve. For instance the spanish language itself is a product of evolving from latin and at one point many words in latin sounded much different from their spanish counterparts. For instance in america we say bratwurst as braht worst when it's actually pronounced braht verst.

I knew Steve. He was a heckuva guy and he did a heckuva job of fixing that murky swamp and making it into a potential tourist attraction. Unfortunately, Steve was killed by Dick Cheney in a "hunting accident" (we all know what that means!) just after Cheney acquired the rights to a McDonald's franchise for the entire region. The only reason they haven't opened the restaurant yet is that Halliburton is doing some exploratory drilling for oil there. BP will own the well, (until it explodes) but most of the profits will be divided between Cheney and Pat Robertson. Steve is turning over in his grave.

I was shocked by the irrelevance of the comments as well. I was thinking how amazing it would be to see such a breathtaking sight and I scrolled down and my high was definitely harshed.

I'm not convinced that stupidity is the issue however. I think that there is a lack of sincerity. Witty contempt is everywhere. I think it shows how much human beings despise themselves.

Nice pictures though. I would love to go there but I've given up stress so don't fly anywhere anymore.

obviously, this is the forbidden lake of troll manifestation. Trolls are born, raised and die with in these waters. Hence the colors. Why do you think toy trolls have such colorful hair? they weren't made up by some crack head, they were based off of evidence of the colorful and majestic troll...Now, the troll leader, Steve, found this lake thousands of years ago. It was a dark murky swamp. He was not only saddened by this image, but determined to make the water a more beautiful flowing stream. Conveniently located far away from humans, Steve began his 234 second long process of remaking the lake into what it is today. Thankfully, geurillas kill all the gorillas that try to eat all the colorful algae. Steve is no longer with us.

>>>>>>>>>>>>Guest1, "now of the comments on this page >>should be about what country your from how dose that >>have to do with alga and moss in a river. and i dont >>think they should open it for tourists, it should be >>left alone so that man can't contaminate it. So that >>it may have a chance to live."

This man is humanity's only hope.
Kudos.

Also, Mamoon - do you have a brother named Muad and were you originally from Libya?

By the way, guerilla is pronounced, 'gur-EE-ya.'

I once ate gorilla while I was on vacation in Africa it was without a doubt one of the tastiest things I have ever eaten. But the chef said you can really only eat the baby ones. The adults meat is to tough.

alas! too many people still need to "wake up". someone posts some stunningly beautiful pictures online and some of the comments bear absolutey no relation to the post itself. unfortunately, this is not the only post that has descended into inane name-calling; indeed the vast majority of comments that can be read almost anywhere on the internet only go to prove the lack of intelligence that's out there....sad.

I cant believe there are this many idiots in the world today. With all of the space and information on the net, you people spend your time calling each other shit like butthole, and and talking about gorillas with their fingers in their ass. It is ignorant people like you that are the reason our world has become such a shit hole. Bring back natural selection and let the dip-shits die out!!

Your an idiot. A guerrilla is a member of an irregular armed force that fights a stronger force, i.e., a rebel. NOT the fucking primate. Also, learn how to spell you uneducated dumbass.

LOL I saw this guerillaz at the zooz one tiem stick it's filthy black finger in it's butt and sniff it. I was all like "ahahahaaha" omgz it was funny

Guerillaz are soo freakin funniez!!!

But, they're certainly not as funny as individuals who feed trolls.

Just to clarify....A gorilla is a large primate and a guerrilla is a foreign insurgent that mainly deals with jungle warfare. The caption utilized the correct spelling.

You're critiquing other people about their misspelling of Colombia while you're the man who spelled misspelled wrong? By the way man it is, is it's not its. Misspelled doesn't own Colombia.
