What the heck is Durkl?!
DURKL isn’t new to us, and by now you should be acquainted as well. But just in case you still aren’t up on the “in-your-face” streetwear line by brothers Will and Cole Sharp, we’re here to lead you to familiarity. We chatted a tad with Will Sharp and head of DURKL operations, Lucas Pierce to discuss future plans, get a feel for DURKL’s aesthics, find out what exactly a DURKL is (you know, interview stuff).

With a name that came from an outburst during a failed attempt at rollerblading in the rain, Durkl has mastered the balance of working hard, with an equal amount of play, in the most definite way. They define street wear as just that - No fuss, no labels, no height requirements. Their definition is inviting to all, and you can find DURKL on the backs of lovers from all demographics and walks of life. Upon entering the warehouse where DURKL makes their magic, I was immediately greeted by a TV with a Sega hook up and skateboards whizzing past my feet.

Perusing racks I found any and everything the “stand apart” male would need in order to bring his fall wardrobe to completion. I even came across a few pieces that the stylish and fashionably open minded lady could put to use. Although one rack held everything from bomber jackets, tees, jeans, coats, and a white leather fringed jacket that made me warm inside, everything was cohesive and had a distinct flow. With their bold use of color and attention to detail, DURKL has done a grand job of defining themselves as a brand and I am confident that I could easily spot one of their pieces in a style line-up. They gained additional points with me when asked about possible plans for a women’s line. Will, noting that women’s design is a completely different arena with fit, cut, style etc. explained that DURKL would rather not go the route of other streetwear brands that simply elongate tees, stamp them with a label, and call them “dresses”. With that being said, they aren’t saying there won’t be a Lady DURKL, they’re just saying they want to do it correctly - For me, there was no better answer.
DURKL is a refreshing brand that adds a touch of culture that’s been missed and needed in DC. They have an opposition to taking anything too seriously clothing-wise, and shared that a lot of their inspiration is drawn from making fun of the fashion industry as a whole. DURKL plans to continue growth, while maintaining their stance and style. I surely hope they stay true to this plan, as I look forward to their future strides (AND a cropped lady’s version of that white leather fringed jacket!) - Brandi Zarr, Style Correspondent for The Glass House
